THROWBACK TRIBUTE
The old time ball player pictured on the home page is my
grandfather Russell "Ducky" Holmes as he stood near home plate at Fenway Park, Boston, in July of 1915. The park was only 2 years old at the time. He was called up to the
the Red Sox in May of that year from their minor league
team in Lewiston, Maine, for fear of losing him to Connie
Macks Philadelphia club. Although a solid catcher, Ducky's stock had been rising since playing third base for an injured Frank "Home Run" Baker during spring training in 1914 at Philadelphia, as old newspaper accounts were comparing his slugging abilities to those of the already
legendary Ty Cobb.
Until he died in 1993 at 102 years, he was known as the oldest living Red Sox and was written about often for his
connection to old time baseball and the beginning of Babe
Ruth's career.
